Should I have suture technique double eyelid surgery or should I have incision technique (open) double eyelid surgery?

Should I have suture technique double eyelid surgery or should I have incision technique (open) double eyelid surgery?

Many patients are curious whether they should have a suture technique double eyelid surgery or whether they should have an incision technique (open) double eyelid surgery.

The answer is simple once you understand the issues involved.  The suture technique is indicated when the all the conditions are right for the suture technique:  1. The patient must not have excess skin hooding. 2. Eyes should be even in that there is minimal asymmetry to the eyelids.  3. The eyes should not show any signs of sleepiness or tiredness.  To be more specific, the eye muscle that elevates the eye (levator aponeurosis) must be strong – your eyes must open fully.

As you can see, the indication for suture technique (non-incision) double eyelid surgery is quite limited.  However, many people get suture technique (non-incision) double eyelid surgery rather than open technique double eyelid surgery.  Why?  Because suture technique is simple to perform.  And suture technique does not leave a visible scar since there is no incision, except a small puncture on the skin.  But as mentioned, the indication for the suture technique double eyelid surgery is very limited whereas the indication for the  incision technique is broad.  The advantage of the incision technique is that it can correct for excess skin, eye and eyelid asymmetry, and it has a much lower chance of fold loss.

In the next blog, we will discuss the downsides or negatives of a suture technique (non-incision) double eyelid surgery and incision technique (open) double eyelid surgery.
