People sometimes apply tape or glue on their upper eyelid to create a double eyelid fold. These people often create a higher double eyelid fold than what should be created surgically.
When a tape or glue is applied on their upper eyelids, a skin to skin temporary connection is made to create a double eyelid fold. This creates a high double eyelid fold as the lower double eyelid fold is attached to the higher double eyelid fold. However, in surgery, a skin is connected to the deeper underlying muscle. If a high double eyelid fold that the patient has chosen with a tape or a glue is used to create a double eyelid fold, then an excessively high double eyelid fold will occur. And when they do, the double eyelid fold would appear full and heavy. It is also known as a “sausage” double eyelid appearance.
One way to create a high double eyelid fold is to use a suture or non-incision double eyelid technique. A suture double eyelid technique can create a “temporary” high fold but again, the double eyelid fold will look puffier and the double eyelid fold can loosen over time. The other way to create a higher double eyelid fold is to create a lower ideal double eyelid fold and removed the excess upper eyelid skin.
Therefore, it is important to choose the double eyelid fold height or size that is optimal for the patient’s individual eyes with the board certified plastic surgeon.
