What Are the Benefits of Awake Plastic Surgery?
For many patients, cosmetic surgery performed without general anesthesia or IV sedation allows them to avoid many of the systemic risks associated with traditional surgery.
By avoiding general anesthesia, patients may reduce their likelihood of experiencing uncomfortable symptoms, such as:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fatigue and grogginess
- Prolonged recovery
- Brain fog and memory loss
- Blood clots
- Heightened nerve sensitivity and discomfort
Local anesthesia affects only the nerve endings in the treatment area, which may result in less discomfort following surgery. While general anesthesia temporarily suppresses the body’s central nervous system, local anesthesia allows it to remain active. Nerves can become more sensitive following general anesthesia, a side effect that is significantly reduced when only the treatment area is anesthetized.
Many patients are able to manage post-surgical discomfort with acetaminophen rather than stronger pain medications, and may return to light activities the day after their procedure.
