Breast reduction is a surgery for women with overly large breasts. Overly large breasts can induce chronic pain in various regions of body, including neck, shoulders, and back. The large sized breasts induce pressure on the bra linings, skin irritations underneath the breasts, and breathing problems. In addition, it creates huge discomfort while playing sports, shopping for clothes, and interacting with others.
The breast reduction surgery entails reducing the size of the areolar, removing excess fatty tissue, and resecting stretched skin. The overall goal of the surgery is to reduce the size of the breast while shaping the natural-appearing breast without leaving unsightly scars.
The surgery will entail scarring, but the importance must be placed on leaving only a minimal amount of scar. The shape of the scar can also be determined with the surgeon and the patient, as it can change the surgical plan. For example, the incision can be made around the areolar with a straight line that comes down to underneath the breast. Or the incision can be made underneath the breast, so that the scar will stay hidden in the fold.
All these important decisions can be made with the surgeon and the patient during the detailed consultation.
The surgical duration will vary based on the approach and implant type used, but the average is 1 to 2 hours.
The choice of anesthesia is given to the patient and the entire procedure may be done under local anesthesia (i.e., a method used by Dr. Kenneth Kim that numbs any sensation on and/or around the surgical site. This is often done through the direct injection of anesthesia at the surgery site and may be accompanied by a mild oral sedative to help ease tension and relax the patient during surgery), intravenous anesthesia (i.e., a method used to render a patient temporarily sedated during surgery), or general anesthesia (i.e., a method used to render a patient temporarily unconscious, paralyzed, and intubated with a breathing tube during surgery).
